Friday Facts - The Darkest Car Ever

What happens when you add the darkest material on to a car!! BMW has the answer for us.

The 2020 BMW X6 Vantablack.

We all love the colour black, on a car. The body lines pop out, the stance of the vehicle is elevated, the aggressive look is bought back and the over silhouette of the vehicle stands out. But when you add in the darkest black that exists on planet earth, then we are on to a whole new conversation.

Vantablack is the darkest man-made material that’s developed using carbon nano tubes. Vantablack absorbs 99.965% of light, making it the closest replica to the black hole.

The name Vantablack has already become synonymous with an entire range of extremely black coatings and paints. It contains an acronym of the technology enabling this superior black in its first two syllables, which stand for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array, a matrix made out of carbon. Each of these carbon nanotubes has a length of 14 to 50 micrometres, with a diameter of 20 nanometres, making it around 5,000 times thinner than a human hair. As a result, around a billion of these vertically aligned carbon nanotubes fit into one square centimetre. Any light striking this surface is almost completely absorbed rather than reflected, and effectively converted into heat.

The folks at BMW showcased there all new “2020 X6 Vantablack” finished in nanostructure paint VBx2 ; at the Frankfurt show last September. With this unique colour sprayed on the car, BMW attracted quite a large number of audiences at the show. The paint finish provided a completely unique visual effect that makes the car look like a 2D object to a naked eye. With there all new illuminating front grill and the aggressive headlamp DESIGN, the X6 VB series looks second to none in terms of its aggressive stance.

When will this car hit the roads?? The answer to this is “Not anytime soon”. BMW says “With the vanta black material imposed on the body of a car, it would be almost impossible to notice the car in dark. The car looks floating and is not safe for the roads. Although the development to implement this paint is in progress, it would be quite some time to have this paint implemented to a production car”
